Regatta report: Wiener Achter

18.05.2026

With the "Vienna Eight" regatta organized by the WRC Pirate, one of the highlights of the Austrian rowing year took place on Saturday, 09.05.2026. In the best weather, more than 50 teams of 8 delivered thrilling races on the Old Danube. Among them: one men's and one women's team from the University of Vienna.

The 4,800m long regatta course is notoriously difficult and demands top performance not only from the rowers but also from the helmsmen. Without marked paths, you have to navigate around the island of the Gänsehäufel at high speed. Especially at the technically demanding turn below the Kagran Bridge, speed and caution must be skilfully weighed up in order not to risk a collision with other boats.

The biggest success of the day was achieved by the women's team, who confidently achieved 1st place in the women's open class in a spectacular race. But the men's team also made it onto the podium and finished 3rd in the men's open class. For the first time in the history of the Vienna Eight, a separate student ranking was also held. In this, the two Viennese teams had to admit defeat to the mixed team of the University of Padua, but took the impressive 2nd (men) and 3rd (women) places.  In the overall standings, the respectable places 28 (men) and 31 (women) were also achieved in view of the great competition. More than enough reason to celebrate and end the day at the subsequent legendary Piratfestl.
